This spring harness the power of mindfulness in your daily life and learn how to disempower anxiety and decentralize depression.
Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a research-based program created by psychologists to heighten the power of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). A unique approach to group therapy, each 8-week course includes:
2-hour weekly meetings on a weekday
A half-day virtual retreat on a weekend
Mindful movement rooted in yoga
Guided meditations
Class activities
Group discussion
Supplemental recordings for home practice

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
Sel (Selena Brown, MFT-LP, RYT-500, she/her) seeks to help individuals lead a life in honor of their authentic voice. Sel offers bilingual (English & Spanish), BIPOC & LGBTQIA+ affirming liberation and wellness practices including bespoke journaling journeys, personalized yoga sessions, mindfulness meditation, and narrative-based psychotherapy. Sel holds degrees from the University of California (B.A., Psychology), Endicott College (M.Ed., International Education), Alliant International University (M.A., Counseling Psychology), and Brown University (A.M. & Ph.D., Theatre Arts & Performance Studies). Sel works virtually with New York-based therapy clients* and is currently enrolled in the Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy Teacher Certification Program through the University of California San Diego Center for Mindfulness**.

Under the light of the last full moon of the year, this chandra vinyasa flow will harness the energy of the peak of the lunar cycle while honoring the 3rd day of Kwanzaa: Ujima, which recognizes “collective work and responsibility.” Dedicating our final practice of the year to all those who supported us in 2020, this very special lunar flow will inscribe in our muscle memory the fact that squad care and self-care go hand-in-hand, setting the tone of communal abundance for the new year.

During the last quarter of the final full lunar phase of 2020 we will practice purifying pranayama and settle into restorative yoga postures that foster deep release based on the premise that releasing tension in the body can inspire an easing of the mind. Under the darkness of the new moon, we will center ourselves in the present while turning to the image of the Sankofa bird, that looks back as it flies onward. From this introspective place of calm, we will write, sketch, and draw, reflecting on how we tended to the seven key aspects of our being this year: security, creativity, empowerment, love, expression, intuition, and connection. Moving ahead with self-compassion, once we’ve planted the seeds that will blossom into our goals for the dawning new year, we will flow through a yoga sequence that will balance solar and lunar energies. As our practice comes to close, a final guided meditation will leave us ready to celebrate our growth - past, present, and future.

All students will be guided and supported. Beginners will work on developing body awareness, familiarity with yoga postures, pranayama (breath control) and meditation techniques. Intermediate and advanced students will be encouraged to deepen all aspects of their yoga practice. Using the breath as a focal point, students will be guided through a series of postures progressing from warm up and easier moves to more complex.
